Course Description

There are voice teachers that specialize in children’s voices and voice teachers who coach college students and adults. But what happened to that in-between?! There is an unspoken gap in the voice industry - getting young singers through puberty in a way that is healthy and where they sound great before and after! Teaching Singing Through Puberty is a 5-hour course with 7 lessons that teach you not only what is physiologically happening during the phase of voice change, but also will teach you all the strategies to handle it.

As you watch live teaching videos, you will see the course track students over the span of a year, so you can hear exactly what they sound like before the voice changes and during the phases of voice change. Taught by Noel Smith (master voice teacher for adolescents and the Broadway community) and Barbara Wilson Arboleda (speech-language pathologist and private voice teacher).

Teaching Singing Through Puberty will give you new resources for finding repertoire and strategies targeted throughout the 10 - 16 age group, split by the stages of voice change. They will give you ideas for working with families and balancing vocal load. You will learn how to identify a vocal problem and how to refer a student for medical care. Noel and Barbara tackle voice change head on without taking things too seriously - by sharing different ideas and experiences founded in over combined 40 years in teaching. Who says puberty needs to be awkward? Your students' voices will sound great before and after.

I highly recommend "Teaching Singing Through Puberty" from the powerhouse team of Noel Smith & Barbara Wilson Arboleda. As a seasoned independent teacher it is always good to have other professionals reinforce your instincts with this unique age to teach. But I can also say that I learned some new things from Noel & Barbara! I can only imagine how much the tools that Noel & Barbara share would have helped me when I was just starting out in the profession. From the science side to practical application during lessons Noel and Barbara cover it all! This is a valuable Course for all teachers - don't miss out!

Pedagogues and teachers Noel Smith and Barbara Wilson Arboleda have constructed an engaging and informative series on working with the young voice. I was especially excited to see the work of classification of young voices as a useful data-driven strategy to understand a young student's vocal trajectory. They provide a fully rounded course in all aspects of the young voice, including 'in vivo' lessons and information on repertoire and vocal health for the young singer. I recommend the work of these two incredible pedagogues without the slightest reservation. If you'd like a great introduction to this information or are looking for a refresher, their work stands as a useful addition to the current new media pedagogy.

This course is incredible! I have come away with a lot of information/reconfirming things I knew to be true, on the impact of puberty in the students' voice. The lessons were insightful, the videos were really packed with amazing information. The different experiences of Noel and Barbara in their careers gave me so many tools, tips and hints into how to help students navigate their voices, but also how to create realistic expectations for them as well. I can't recommend this program enough.
